How can I install PHP 5.6 (instead of 5.4)? Raspbian is built on Debian Jessie. The installable PHP version is in the 5.6 branch. But the php_mbstring. Compression and Archive Extensions. Mbstring is a non-default extension. This means it is not enabled by default. Yum install php-mbstring then.

  • Automatic or manual installation of latest PHP 7 on Debian 8 Jessie Linux.
  • Installing Php 7.2 On Debian 8 Jessie And Debian 9 Stretch 2018-03-07 Previously I wrote an article on how to install PHP 7.2 on Debian 8, since 7.2 is now available here is how to install 7.2.
  • Compression and Archive Extensions Credit Card Processing Cryptography Extensions Database Extensions. Mbstring is a non-default extension. This means it is not enabled by default. Fedora 9 -- yum install php-mbstring then httpd -k restart to freshen the environment.

What is the PHP mbstring extension, and what is the best way to install it on Ubuntu 14.04?

EDIT:Dylan Pierce has confirmed that you can already install some PHP 7 extensions in the same way you would for PHP 5. For mbstring in particular, you can execute:

To complement sparkmood's answer, this now works for PHP 7 if you already imported ondrej's PPA for it.

Don't forget, either PHP 7 is available through ubuntu's official repositories or you will need an external PPA.

mbstring is built in libapache2-mod-php5 package, so you can use this command for installing :

As described in package details :

For Ubuntu 14.04 extension mbstring should be built in.

For Ubuntu 16.04:

It requires adding another source for apt for install in 18.04..

Download Page for php7.2-mbstring_7.2.7-0ubuntu0.18.04.2_amd64.deb on AMD64 machines

If you are running Ubuntu, it is strongly suggested to use a package manager like aptitude or synaptic to download and install packages, instead of doing so manually via this website.

You should be able to use any of the listed mirrors by adding a line to your /etc/apt/sources.list like this:

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-security main universe

Open up a terminal (# - 'shorthand' for terminal) and run these commands:

or use ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/centos/6.3/os/x86_64/Packages/php-mbstring-5.3.3-3.el6_2.8.x86_64.rpm for 64-bit, depending on your system.

Php Mbstring Extension Ubuntu

If you use a desktop interface (most likely), you can just double click on the .rpm file in the file browser to install, instead of using terminal. This is kind of the 'old' way to install things. Before yum simplified things.

Please note that you need to run as root. The best way to do so is to type sudo before each command. Example:
